04 Dec Non-Traditional Muzzleloader Accessories (and Why You Need Them)
Alright muzzleloader crew, listen up. This post is going to break the mold somewhat.
There are some muzzleloader accessories you need in your possibles bag. You know; jags, patches, oil and grease, and so on and so forth.
Most of these are traditional accessories and have earned their place in the bottoms of possibles bags for hundreds of years and many generations, proving their worth through actual service.
But the modern market has done better, and there are some cutting-edge muzzleloader accessories that every possibles bag should have from here on out.
Despite the fact that they are not traditional. Here they are.
A Three-Piece Aluminum Muzzleloader Ramrod
Most conventional muzzleloader ramrods are made of wood. Others are made of fiberglass. Nearly all of them are one piece.
They work, but that’s the best we can say for it. Our 3-piece muzzleloader ramrods are made from nearly indestructible aluminum and break down into three pieces so they can be carried in your bag.
And they’re much better than the traditional versions.
Why you need this muzzleloader accessory: Because they don’t break and they pack down into a much smaller footprint. Wooden and fiberglass ramrods break. That is not something you want to experience in the field.
A Muzzleloader Speed Loader
A loading block is better than nothing, but it’s not a cure-all. Modern muzzleloader speed loaders contain the pre-measured charge and the bullet in sequence, which is everything you need to complete the loading sequence minus the primer.
Why you need this muzzleloader accessory: Loading blocks only hold a patched ball. You could still forget the charge, which would require you to pull the bullet. With a modern muzzleloader speed loader, the chances of forgetting the charge are slim to none, plus it’s pre-measured so it’s faster.
A Synthetic Muzzleloader Bullet Starter
Traditional muzzleloader bullet starters are made from wood which means they suffer from the same shortcomings as conventional muzzleloader ramrods.
Why you need this muzzleloader accessory: Our muzzleloader bullet starter is made from one single piece of basically indestructible nylon. They don’t warp, don’t rot, don’t absorb moisture or oil, and most importantly, are nearly impossible to break. They do everything a wood ball starter does, but they’re tougher. That’s a sell if you ask us.
A CO2 Discharger (Not a Ball Puller!)
Don’t take this the wrong way. You absolutely should have a ball or bullet puller in your possibles bag.
Hopefully you never have to use it, though, because the only way you can safely do so is by removing the barrel and soaking the breech end in water until the charge is saturated.
This helps prevent the risk of igniting the charge while you’re trying to pull the ball or bullet. It also complicates trying to pull a stuck ball or bullet in the field.
Let alone the fact that you need to be in front of the muzzle to pull a ball or bullet the old-fashioned way.
There is a better method.
Why you need this muzzleloader accessory: A CO2 discharger, also known as a silent ball discharger, injects a stream of CO2 into the chamber behind the ball or bullet, which expands and forces the projectile out the muzzle.
Not only can this be easily and safely done in the field, you don’t need to be in front of the muzzle to use it. Much easier, safer, and faster.
A Muzzleloader Muzzle Brake
This one’s not a muzzleloader accessory in the conventional sense of the word. All the same, they offer a lot of value.
If your muzzleloader is compatible with it, they do two big things. A muzzleloader muzzle brake can cut recoil and disperse the muzzle plume.
Why you need this muzzleloader accessory: Not so much because of the recoil reduction, but definitely because they can disperse the muzzle plume more effectively, so you can see more quickly if your shot connected with your target and if a follow-up shot will be necessary.
Full-Bore Bullets
This one’s also not quite a muzzleloader accessory in the conventional sense of the world, but all the same, full bore bullets like Thor muzzleloader bullets (or Hornady Bore Driver ELD-X bullets) are better than patched round balls or saboted rounds.
Why you need this muzzleloader accessory: Shooting full-bore bullets like Thor muzzleloader bullets eliminates the need for you to carry and use patches. Moreover, full-bore bullets produce a better gas seal, resulting in greater power downrange.
